Cremallera (cog railway)
Best for: families, anyone uneasy with heights, travellers who want comfort over thrills
One voucher for the full journey: metro, FGC R5 train, your choice of Cremallera or Aeri cable car, both mountain funiculars and entry to the basilica with the Black Madonna.
A single voucher covers every part of your journey from central Barcelona to the monastery and back — and the key sights on top of the mountain.
Two metro journeys included — get from your hotel to Plaça Espanya and back without buying separate tickets.
Direct train from Plaça Espanya towards Manresa. Roughly one hour each way; runs hourly with extra services in the morning.
Take the cog railway from Monistrol (relaxed, with seats) or the cable car from Aeri (panoramic, 5 minutes). You'll decide when you pick up your tickets at the Tourist Information.
Ride up to 1,000 metres for the Sant Joan viewpoint and the start of the mountain's hiking trails.
Down to the Holy Cave where the Black Madonna was found. Occasionally closed for maintenance — check on the day.
Entry to "Montserrat Portes Endins", the multimedia exhibition that explains the history of the mountain and the monastery.
Direct entry to the basilica and to the Throne of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta) — no separate booking needed.
Trans Montserrat covers one of the two mountain transports. Both bring you to the same place at the top, but the experience is very different. You make your choice when you exchange your voucher for printed tickets at the Tourist Information in Barcelona — so think about it before you arrive, and tell the staff which one you want.
Best for: families, anyone uneasy with heights, travellers who want comfort over thrills
Best for: travellers chasing the iconic views; not ideal if you're afraid of heights
Heads up: the last Aeri usually runs around 6:00 PM and can pause in strong wind. The Cremallera runs later and is more weather-resistant.
Pick your travel day and book online. Your voucher arrives by email straight away — one voucher covers the entire journey.
Show your voucher at the Tourist Information at Plaça de Catalunya 14 (in front of El Corte Inglés). Open daily 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Tell the staff whether you want the Cremallera (cog railway) or the Aeri (cable car) — your choice is final at this point. You'll receive printed tickets for each leg of the journey.
Walk down to the FGC platform at Plaça Espanya and board the R5 towards Manresa. Get off at Monistrol de Montserrat (for the Cremallera) or one stop earlier at Aeri de Montserrat (for the cable car). Do not get off at Olesa de Montserrat — that's a different line.
At the top, use the funiculars to Sant Joan and Santa Cova freely, visit the basilica and the Throne of the Madonna, and watch the Portes Endins exhibition. Return whenever you like with the same tickets.
Aim for the 8:36 AM service: it's the most relaxed, gives you a quiet monastery and a guaranteed seat. The 9:36 train is reliably crowded.

One sample itinerary that gets you a calm morning at the monastery, the Sant Joan viewpoint, lunch with a view and a comfortable ride back to Barcelona.
Reserve now, pay later. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
A truly stress-free way to see Montserrat. The buffet, the railway, the views from Sant Joan — all of it was the highlight of our Barcelona week.
Everything worked as described. The voucher exchange at Plaça de Catalunya was quick, the staff explained the train platforms clearly, and the Cremallera ride was spectacular.
Tip: take the 8:36 train. We did the 9:36 and it was packed standing room only. The mountain itself is magical, especially early before the crowds arrive.
Trans Montserrat covers the transport and the basilica with the Throne of the Madonna — everything you need for a half-day visit. Tot Montserrat adds the Museum of Montserrat and a lunch buffet at the monastery restaurant. If you want a full day with culture and a sit-down meal, choose Tot. For the classic visit with views, the Trans Montserrat is the right pick.
At the Tourist Information at Plaça de Catalunya 14, in front of El Corte Inglés. It's open daily from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Show your digital voucher, and you'll receive printed tickets for every leg of the journey. From there, walk or take the metro to Plaça Espanya for the R5 train.
The Cremallera (cog railway) is a 15-minute, seated ride with large windows — comfortable and family-friendly. The Aeri (cable car) is a 5-minute panoramic ride with standing room only — spectacular but not ideal if you're afraid of heights. The Cremallera also runs later in the evening and is less weather-sensitive. You'll choose when you exchange your voucher for printed tickets at the Tourist Information in Barcelona — and at that point your choice is final, so know what you want before you arrive.
Take the 8:36 AM R5 from Plaça Espanya for the calmest experience: empty trains, a quiet monastery, and clear morning light for photos. By 9:36 the train fills up significantly. If you want to see the boys' choir (Monday–Friday at 1:00 PM), aim to arrive before 12:30 to find a place inside the basilica.
Yes. Trans Montserrat includes entry to the basilica and direct access to the Throne of the Black Madonna (La Moreneta). The Throne is closed between 10:30 AM and 12:00 noon for the morning mass, so plan around that window.
Plan for a full half-day or more. Travel time from central Barcelona to the monastery is about 1.5 hours each way, including the metro, the train and the cog railway or cable car. Most visitors spend 3 to 5 hours on the mountain itself, which is enough for the basilica, the Throne, the audiovisual exhibition, the Sant Joan viewpoint and one of the funiculars.
Yes. Cancellations up to 24 hours before your booked time are fully refunded. You can also rebook for a different date if your plans change.
Yes. Trans Montserrat is a round-trip product — the same voucher and tickets cover both the journey up and the journey back. You can return any time during opening hours.
Everything Trans includes, plus the Museum of Montserrat and a lunch buffet. For a full day with art and a sit-down meal.
